Inclusive development is a development prioritized to alleviate poverty and to encourage all community groups to contribute in creating opportunities, benefits, and participation in decision-making. Small industry is one of the target groups prioritized in inclusive development, especially in the creation of innovation. This paper aims to map the innovation potential of smallindustry in Indonesia. Potential innovations are represented by several indicators, namely: industrial resources obtained, innovation activities and industrial cooperation with the provider of science and technology. Innovation potential of small industry in Indonesia is still not statistically well identified. Therefore, this paper seeks to provide a preliminary description of the innovation activities in small industry. The data used as the basis of the analysis is synthesized from the innovation survey ofmanufacturing industry in Indonesia conducted in 2011. Total of 1.375 respondents, 556 respondents are identified as small industry. Out of the total, 350 small industry declares innovation activities both technological innovation and nontechnological innovation. Using descriptive analysis, it is known that small industry innovation activities are quite diverse ranging from: the acquisition of knowledge, human resource training, and intramural R & D activities. This indicates that the industry has potential for inclusive development.

Abstract

This paper aims to present types as well as effectiveness in international research collaboration projects. Sixteen collaborative research projects at LIPI, an Indonesian government R&D institution, operated between 2001-2010 were evaluated. The effectiveness of the project was examined by comparing types and its benefits, and elements associated to the effectiveness of the projects. The research identified seven different types of collaboration and two major benefits which are publication and human resource or institutional capacity building. Meanwhile, a small number of the collaboration projects produced innovation, particularly where the triple helix structure - collaboration between academician, business and government - existed and promoted. Thus, three elements were found to beessential in supporting effective research collaboration: bargaining position; trust based competence; and trust based relationship.

Abstract

Inter Organizational relations (IOR) plays an important role in enhancing firms activities. By utilizing IOR, firms may acquire knowledge, access to economic inputs, and build their competitive advantages. Meanwhile, automotive industry which is characterized by high degree of vertical interdepencies generally retain a well developed and great varieties of IOR.This paper aims to analyze IOR in Indonesia’s automotive industry by conducting case studies of three Japanese firm tenants. The result of the study shows that IOR occured in those three companies. Nevertheless, the IOR differs among the tenants in terms of types, causal factors, driving factors, and barriers. These variations depend on the firm’s position within the industrial structures developed by Japanese automotive manufacturers. The closer the firm’s position, the stronger the IOR. The study also identifies that IOR in the second layer firms contribute to the firm’s learning activities and their technological capabilities.

Abstract

Small vegetables farmers are required to meet the demand of export markets in the aspect of quality, quantity, sustainability, food safety and competitive prices. Small vegetables farmers should increase the integrated capacity of technological, managerial and institutional in order to fulfill export marketdemand. Universitas Padjadjaran had action research program to helping small vegetables farmers to increase their capacities. The action research program included science and technology application for vegetables export which emphasized on protected agriculture and sprinkle irrigation system. The application of these technologies parallel with the assistance of exportmarket access used contract mechanisme, as well as acces to finance. The program had implemented for three years at Pangalengan, the Distric of Bandung, West Java. In the first year, the program focused on farmers collective system development, protected agriculture development using greenhouse and export market acces. The vegetables production planning improvement, further development of protected agriculture and acces to finance were implemented in the second year program. In the last year, the program applied protected agriculture using rain shelter, sprinkle irrigation system development, and acces to finance. This article discusses about how to understand causal relationship and complexity in the program of science and technology aplication in order to fulfill export market demand. Systemthinking with policy structure diagram (stock and flow diagram) had used to understand a structure of causal relationship among variables in the program to helping small vegetables farmers increase their agribusiness capacities.

Abstract

To deal with increasingly tight competition in this globalization, it is essential for firms to have dynamic change for increasing competitiveness. One attempt to improve competitiveness is through innovation. Sources of information and knowledge have important role in innovation process. Using two case studies of firms in textile and textile products (TPT), this paper seeks to examine the presence, types, and role of sources of information and knowledge in innovation process. Innovation is viewed as learning process configuring a loop which consists of problem finding, problem selecting, solution finding, and solution selecting process. Results of the study shows that sources of information and knowledge either internal or external haveimportant role in innovation process of the firms in TPT’s sector. Utilization of appropriate and optimal sources of information and knowledge may become key factor of innovation for the firms. The broader the sources used by the firms, the higher the innovation level is. External parties play important role in supplying information and knowledge in the problemfinding and solution finding. Whilst, internal parties hold main role in problem selecting and solution selecting process.
